No mega party can threaten APC - Oyegun

- Chief Odigie-Oyegun said the APC is not afraid of a mega party

- The APC chairman said the idea was welcomed to make the ruling party sit tight

- He insisted that the new party cannot challenge the authority of the APC

Chief John Odigie-Oyegun who is the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has said that he is in support of the emergence of a mega party which he believes will allow the party sit tight.

There has been report that disgruntled elements in the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party were planning to unite to form a new mage party that will challenge for power in 2019 and Odigie-Oyegun has said that he has nothing against the formation.

The Nation reports that the APC chairman spoke on Tuesday, December 27 where he said the APC was not threatened by the formation of a mega party.

He said those behind the new mega party should be encouraged to challenge the AP and admitted that the party has not had it easy due to the current economic recession.

Odigie-Oyegun insisted that APC chieftains were not behind the mega party and said he has met with the leadership of the National Assembly and a former vice president.

He also said the party was awaiting the arrival of Chief Bola Tinubu and said not mega party can threaten the position of the APC,

He said: “We are waiting for the arrival of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu so that we can also meet with him and have meaningful discussion because he is a well-respected leader of this party.”

“We don’t feel threatened at all. No mega party will survive the APC. I don’t know where the name mega party suddenly came from in the lexicon of politics in this country. We will infact encourage a mega party, because with the gradual collapse of PDP, we want a party that can make us sit upright and be on our toes in terms of delivery of services to our people.

“A party that will make us feel challenged, that will make democracy real and offer the people a real choice. We are not threatened at all. We are focused on our mission made difficult by the current economic situation worldwide, which of course is compounded by the collapse of the oil market. We are reforming this country, reforming it ethically, morally and economically by building a fresh economic base which will no longer depend on the extractive industry which does not involve the people.”

Recall that reports emerged recently that the trio of Tinubu, Atiku and the Ahmed Makarfi-led faction of the PDP were planning a meg party for sometime in March 2017.

But Tinubu denied the reports saying he would not abandon APC for any other party no matter the reason. His comments have been widely saluted.
